The last day of the year. A time when many of us make resolutions: go to the gym, lose weight, quit smoking, reconnect with old friends, and more. Yet these goals often prove short-lived. In reality, the New Year is just a change of date, like the end of a month, but with a few extra formalities.

A year ago, I said that 2024 would be full of surprises. It has been, especially regarding my foot, which, since May 2023 and after six surgeries, still hasn’t fully healed. I recently had an MRI in preparation for my next procedure. On 16 January, a biopsy will be performed on my ankle to confirm whether the antibiotic treatment has successfully eradicated the staphylococcus bacteria.

So, the overall assessment of 2024 is rather mixed. Several people, close friends or care professionals, wonder how I cope with this long-term disability. It’s not in my nature to easily share my worries. Even though I rarely talk about my ankle with those close to me, I often find myself reflecting on the future and the quality of life ahead. I also wake more frequently at night with these thoughts. I hope the February operation will bring good news. It will be a crucial milestone, especially since the surgeons see it as a last chance.

Selfishly, I wish for a procedure that restores at least some mobility and independence. I know my ankle will never be the same, and some lasting effects will remain. As for 2025, as my Moroccan friends say: إن شاء الله, In shā’ Allāh!

May this new year bring peace, health, and serenity!

May it be gentle and full of happy moments with family and friends!

May it bring happiness, success, achievement, and opportunities!

And… may it also bring plenty of money… along with a bit of time to spend it! 😊
