Three years ago, I was on the road heading towards Morocco, ready to embark on what promised to be an unforgettable adventure. As I travelled along the Catalan coast, with the Balearic Islands on the horizon, the sense of excitement was at its peak.
A year ago, at this time, I was recovering in hospital from one of many operations. During that procedure, the plates were removed following a second staphylococcal infection.
This week, Deniz stayed with me during his school holidays. Making the most of his time here, he set about cleaning the balcony, which had been neglected for the past three years. After a thorough clean, he planted the flowers we had chosen. The result is simply perfect.
In the garden, he continued clearing weeds and planted potatoes. We chose two different varieties in order to stagger the harvest and avoid being overwhelmed by a sudden abundance of potatoes.
I also took the initiative to have the old wooden toolbox removed, as it is falling apart, along with the two compost bins that had ended up filled with non-compostable waste. I am planning to buy a proper compost bin and a separate container for green waste.
During his stay, what was meant to be a simple helping hand turned into a full refresh of the flat. In my current situation, this kind of support goes far beyond comfort, it has become essential. As long as I have to wear this cast and move around on crutches, certain everyday tasks are simply impossible. Trying to vacuum under these conditions is a good example.
Deniz took charge with efficiency and generosity, and I am sincerely grateful to him.
From a practical point of view, this type of domestic assistance can be covered by my health insurance. It therefore felt only natural to pass the amount on to him. This gesture also helps to ease his daily life a little. Between his salary and the grant he receives as part of his studies, his financial flexibility remains limited. Leisure expenses are often set aside, and even access to the hospital gym, despite being offered at a reduced rate, is beyond his budget.
In the meantime, spring is slowly settling in, and I can now enjoy my balcony again, sipping a coffee and writing this blog.
