The dice are cast. Tomorrow, an early wake-up call, I need to be at the hospital by 6:30 am, with the operation expected to start around 8 and last between 3 and 4 hours. The anaesthetist just called to discuss the procedure. I’ll be having a spinal anaesthetic combined with sedation so that I won’t be aware of what’s going on. It’s the same process as during my last three operations at this hospital.
I still have mixed feelings, not so much about the fifth operation itself, but more about the prospect of 12 weeks of immobilisation afterwards.
Also, this operation won’t be quite like the last time when they fitted screws and a side plate. This time, they’re going to stabilise my ankle, which will limit foot movement, but shouldn’t affect my ability to walk. We’ll see!
I’ve already contacted the orthopaedic shop that rented me my scooter before. I’m going to rent one again and have informed my insurance, which is still asking questions about covering the costs.
The hospital’s social services team also called to discuss my admission, to check if I have transport to get there tomorrow morning or if they need to organise something for me. They asked several administrative questions too. It seems they’re also concerned about my mental state, how I’m feeling ahead of yet another surgery, and how I’ll manage once back home given my immobility, etc. A social worker will come to visit me to discuss these points!
Since I have to fast for six hours before the operation, tonight will be my last meal. No breakfast, coffee, or any drinks tomorrow morning. On the plus side, I’ve always been served a hearty meal after the operation. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow!
I’ll update my blog as soon as I have the energy.
