Last Friday, Dr Zimmermann, the head of the orthopaedics department, called me to inform that the biopsy scheduled for tomorrow was cancelled. The infectious disease specialist confirmed that after nearly 14 weeks of antibiotics, there are no longer any bacteria present. I was then summoned for a consultation this afternoon. I’ve just returned from the hospital where the entire team outlined the next steps.

To confirm the absence of bacteria, a SPECT-CT scan was performed. It shows that the bone mass is rebuilding, proof that the infection is under control. Therefore, the operation planned for early February is on hold in favour of a new approach.

Next Friday, I will return to the hospital to meet with a supplier of orthopaedic prosthetics. This new method involves using a prosthesis, a carbon cast that envelops the ankle and applies gradual pressure to realign the bones. This could help avoid another surgical intervention (the sixth). While this solution doesn’t rule out surgery later, given all the operations I’ve already had, the surgeons prefer to try a non-invasive option first.

If the prosthesis works, I should be able to walk without crutches and wear regular shoes. Another piece of good news: I will be able to stop the antibiotic treatment, which was starting to take a toll on my digestive system.

If this prosthesis doesn’t achieve the expected results, the original plan of inserting a rod through the heel anchored in the tibia remains an option. However, this operation is complex, so the doctors want to prioritise the gentler approach first.

This news is very positive, as it spares me a long hospital stay, six weeks in a cast, rehabilitation, and crutches. I’ll know more next Friday. For now, I’m relieved and happy to stop the antibiotics.

In the photo, you can see a prosthesis similar to the one intended for me, mine will cover a bit more of the ankle, but the principle is the same. I’m eager to see how it will work. It’s been 18 months since my accident, and lately, I was starting to lose hope, seeing no end to this tunnel. This news has given me renewed confidence and hope.
