It’s been nearly two months since my surgery to remove the plate and screws from my ankle. I no longer have any pain, but the 12-week course of antibiotics is really taking a toll on my digestive system. I have to take six antibiotic tablets a day, along with blood thinners and anti-inflammatories. To protect my gut flora, I’m also taking probiotics and yeast supplements.

In the meantime, I’ve moved back into my flat, where the kitchen and bathroom have just been renovated. Two weeks ago, my cousin and his wife helped me get organised. With the new layout of the appliances, it wasn’t possible to put the crockery back in the same places as before, but his wife’s meticulous organisation made the whole process much easier for me.

Despite the dust barrier set up during the work, a fine layer of dust got everywhere. Luckily, Deniz came to help me do a thorough clean, for which I’m very grateful.

Many friends thought the choice of colours for the kitchen was quite bold, but once finished, I think the ash grey combined with red works really well. The new appliances do take some getting used to: the induction hob has loads of functions and its size is really convenient. The oven offers a multitude of programmes, which I’m still exploring in the manual. The dishwasher also has several options, some downloadable via the internet. Only the fridge and freezer remain simple to use. All these appliances are connected to WiFi and can be controlled via a smartphone app!

The bathroom is fairly classic, but I really like the rain-effect shower, which I can use while sitting on an adapted stool. Yesterday, the glass panel between the shower and the rest of the room was installed. Apart from a cupboard above the induction hob that needs replacing due to a delivery error, the work is now complete, and I’m happy with the result. All the companies involved did an excellent job.

On Wednesday, I had an appointment with my surgeon and the medical team. After another X-ray and having my cast changed, we discussed the next steps. This morning, I received documents from the hospital confirming that I will be admitted on 16 January for a bone biopsy to check for any staphylococcus bacteria in my ankle. I’ll stay there overnight. As soon as the results are available, probably in early February, a seventh surgical procedure will be scheduled.

In the meantime, an MRI is planned for 20 December to get a 3D view of my ankle, which will help the surgeons refine their operative plan.
