Last Monday, I went to pick up my orthosis from the orthopaedic specialist. After a few adjustments, I was able to take my first steps with the final version of the device. As with previous trials, I still need to get used to walking without crutches, which causes some balance issues. But most importantly, the orthosis has been adjusted to compensate for the difference in leg length and to correct the inward tilt of my foot. As a result, the feeling of standing is very different from when I was wearing a cast. The new shoe, also heavily modified, provides me with greater stability and supports my posture well.
I had to make several trips back and forth within the shop so the orthopaedist could observe my walk and check my posture. Everything was filmed, which allowed us to analyse the different phases of my movement afterwards: foot roll, stability, posture, and so on. Since Monday afternoon, I’ve been wearing this new device.
This afternoon, I had a follow-up appointment with my surgeon, who wanted to see how I’m adapting to the orthosis. X-rays were taken, showing that the orthosis is gently pushing the bones back towards their original position, exactly the intended effect. I’m due back for another check-up in two months. He emphasised again that this solution isn’t necessarily permanent, but given the current situation, he doesn’t want to consider another surgery. I’m quite happy with that decision, as I really want to enjoy the mobility I’ve just regained. That said, honestly, I can’t imagine wearing this orthosis for the rest of my life. But for now, it’s a perfectly acceptable solution.
My colleague René, who I travelled with in Indonesia and Patagonia, decided it was time for a break. He suggested heading south, and we’ve booked two bungalows at a campsite near Barcelona for a week. I’m really looking forward to a change of scenery!
